dental exam in regina and saskatoon

It is important to maintain excellent oral health. One way to maintain a healthy mouth is to have regular dental exams so that you can catch any potential problems before they get worse. When you visit Simpli Dental, our dentists will check your teeth, gums, bone, and other oral structures for defects and disease. This includes evaluating your risk of developing an oral health condition and identifying present concerns. A dental exam typically includes utilizing x-rays (radiographs) and other diagnostic procedures to provide the oral health professionals with sufficient information to provide an informed diagnosis and treatment plan.

why are dental exams important?

Regular dental exams help protect us from serious and potentially painful oral health conditions. They are not just for your oral health, but also for your overall health. If your hygienist or dentist indicates a systemic disease that is present in the oral cavity, they will suggest that you see a medical doctor. The exam also gives your dentist a chance to provide care for your teeth to detect oral health problems earlier. Early detection results in less complicated and costly treatment.

what to expect during a dental exam?

Your first visit will involve a discussion about your dental and medical history, followed by an evaluation that will discover any potential problems with your teeth. Some examination techniques include:

  • X-rays: These are used to detect decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss.
  • Oral cancer screening: By checking the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gums, we can detect signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease: By checking the gums and bones around the teeth, we can detect signs of any potential disease.
  • Tooth decay: We will check all tooth surfaces for signs of decay or cavities.
  • Past restorations: We will check your current fillings, crowns, etc.

If your dentist doesn’t notice any problems, they will begin cleaning your teeth by scaling, polishing, and treating them with fluoride. If your dentist does notice any problems, you will be given a treatment plan and walk through the next steps of treatment. If at any time during the dental exam you have a question, the dental team would be glad to help answer them for you.

how often do I need to get a dental exam?

We typically recommend patients get their teeth cleaned every four to six months. Some patients that get minimal tartar build-up may be able to get their teeth cleaned every twelve months. For patients that are at high risk of developing oral health conditions, we may suggest more frequently. If you are having any pain or tenderness in or around your mouth we suggest you contact a dental professional as soon as possible. Even if you no longer have your natural teeth, it’s important to see your dentist for regular exams to maintain your oral health and the condition of your replacement teeth. Our dental hygienists will be able to determine the ideal frequency based on your individual needs.
