orthodontics in calgary

Diagnosing and preventing misaligned teeth and jaws can address common oral health problems associated with crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatment can also improve oral hygiene, and speech and result in a more comfortable and confident smile. Tooth movement is the result of gentle, consistent pressure on the teeth that results in changes in the underlying bone and movement to a new position. This can be done with clear aligners or conventional braces. Both are considered orthodontic treatments.

why is orthodontics important?

Orthodontics improves function, appearance, patient confidence, and speech by correcting tilted, crowded, rotated, crooked, protruding or spaced out teeth. Straighter teeth result in less long-term wear and are easier to clean, which helps control gingival inflammation.

Orthodontics can help you with a variety of different alignment problems as well, such as:

  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Overcrowding
  • Aesthetic problems

Prior to recommending an orthodontic treatment, our dentists will treat any existing dental conditions such as plaque, periodontitis (gum disease), and tooth decay. Orthodontics can worsen these conditions if not treated carefully first.

what type of orthodontics are available?

While various different orthodontic treatments exist, clinicians at Simpli Dental realign teeth via clear aligners. Another popular orthodontic term is Invisalign. For more information, read our blog post Clear Correct vs. Invisalign – What’s the Difference?

is there an age limit to receive orthodontics?

Generally, no. Although orthodontic treatment can be more effective and efficient when completed on younger patients, it can also be performed on adults.

For very young children, sometimes the best orthodontic treatment is careful monitoring of their development. If the child has severe misalignment issues and is over the age of seven years, a dentist or orthodontist might recommend treatment in the form of traditional braces as opposed to clear aligners. Orthodontic treatment for children will align your child’s teeth and provide the best foundation for their adult teeth to develop correctly. Early intervention with children prevents overcrowding and substantially reduces the duration of treatment.

Orthodontic treatment is useful for adults as it can reduce the risk of tooth decay, periodontal disease and prevent other issues associated with misaligned teeth.

It is estimated that approximately one-third of all orthodontic patients are adults.
