dental extractions in regina and saskatoon

what are dental extractions?

Dental extractions are the process of removing a tooth from the jaw bone. Extractions can range in difficulty depending on a number of factors including the position of the tooth, the anatomy, and the density of the bone. They can be simple and straightforward or complicated and require a surgical approach. Teeth extractions can be recommended when the tooth’s decay becomes so severe that it cannot be saved. Another reason for tooth extraction is when a tooth is infected.

why are dental extractions needed?

A dental extraction is needed when the tooth is deemed to not be restorable. This can be because too much of the natural tooth structure is missing or the supporting bone has been severely compromised. Sometimes teeth are removed to aid in development or to assist with orthodontic treatment by making room for other teeth.

Other reasons for tooth extractions are as follows:

  • Tooth decay
  • Broken teeth
  • Make room for orthodontic treatment
  • Poorly positioned teeth (i.e. impacted teeth)
  • Periodontal (gum) disease

when should I consider making an appointment?

Consider making an appointment at Simpli Dental if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Bleeding gums – If your gums bleed after eating, brushing, or flossing, it is a sign that something may be amiss and you should book an appointment.

A receding gumline – Like with the other signs mentioned, a receding gumline does not necessarily mean you have gum disease (it could be from the way you brush) but you should have a dentist diagnose the cause.

Pain when eating or a loose tooth – If eating causes you pain or you feel your teeth are loosening, you need to see a dentist immediately. A healthy mouth should never hurt or feel sore.

Halitosis (bad breath) – Bad breath doesn’t always mean that you have gum disease but it’s best to eliminate it as a cause of your halitosis, especially if you maintain good dental hygiene.

what occurs during the dental extraction procedure?

Once a tooth extraction has been determined as the best option, a Simpli Dental team member will set up a date and time for your appointment. Occasionally, an antibiotic may be prescribed before or after the procedure depending on if the tooth is infected or at risk of infection.

The dentist will begin by injecting the area with a local anesthetic. Once the dentist begins the extraction, you will feel pressure or a light tug, but there should not be any pain. If you do feel pain, please let your dentist know immediately.

Once the tooth extraction is complete, your dentist will pack the site with gauze to help stop bleeding. In some cases, they may place a few stitches as well.

Once home, be sure to get rest until the anesthetic wears off. While recovering, please also refrain from smoking or chewing tobacco, using a straw, chewing on hard candies or food, or picking at the extraction site.

will dental extractions hurt?

Dental extractions typically are not painful. A dental anesthetic is used to freeze the extraction site to prevent any pain during the procedure. Patients usually have mild discomfort following a dental extraction that can be relieved with painkillers, such as Ibuprofen.

If you experience instances of pain and bleeding that do not stop within 24 hours following the procedure, please contact our Regina or Saskatoon office immediately.

how much do dental extractions cost?

The cost of a dental extraction ranges based on the complexity and the number of teeth that are being removed. Simpli Dental’s fees for extractions start at $155. Please see our pricing page for additional information.
